Hardbound in good+ to very good condition, 371 pages includes aFRONTISPIECE protected by glassine, a PREFACE, CONTENTS, LIST OFILLUSTRATIONS, two Fold-out MAPS, APPENDIXES A thru J, and an ExtensiveINDEX, no dust jacket, likely none issued. The boards are covered in grey/green cloth with tri-colored titles anddesign on the spine and cover. The surfaces are free of significant soiling, unfaded but some scuffing noted.. Edge wear is modest with no worn through areas, sight creasing to the ends of the spine, corners toe in but are not broken.The interior reveals the book to be clean, modestlyage toned as would be expected in a century old book, however, nofoxing. The contents are firmly bound with no loose pages. There is a small vintage bookseller label inside the rear board, upper edge next to the spine. There are no previous owner names, no marks, creases or tears.Lt.Youngspent slightly more than a year inHawaiiat avery delicate and eventful time in history. Upon returning to theUnited States he organized and wrote-up his notes. In finding that thecurrent administration’s public accounting of the events differedconsiderably from that which he knew to be correct, Lt.Youngpromptlyrequested permission from the military to publish his manuscript.After two months wait, permission was denied. Eventually, following achange in the political administration and a return trip toHawaii,LucienYoungin 1898 self-published the first edition which he calledTHE BOSTON AT HAWAII. The following year 1899, after including someadditional information regarding the history, geography, details aboutthe people, population, culture, etc., Doubleday & McClure Co. appliedfor a new copyright and handled the subsequent publishing task on hisbehalf. NOTE: THE BOSTON AT HAWAII included several items that were omitted from THE REAL HAWAII, those being 1) The “BOSTON” photo, 2) “A Hula Girl” photo: perhaps a bit risque for the new administration and 3) a ten page fold out map, The SOUTH SIDE of OAHU.” THE REAL HAWAII presents with 371 pages compared to the 317 of THE BOSTON AT HAWAII.THE REALHAWAIIcombines an interesting overall narrativeof theHawaiianIslands of the 1890s plus one of a very few, firsthandaccounts, some 200 pages regarding the preceding events and theactual overthrow of the Monarchy. An extensive series ofAPPENDICES give an in depth statistical presentation ofHawaiiseconomic position during the late 1800s.In recent years, public interest in these historic eventshas increased with reprinted contemporary editions being made available. Originalprintings from the turn of the century however, particularly non-library copies have becomeexceedingly rare. In very nice condition, this REALHAWAIIwould be aprize addition to an Island collection.
